STANDARD VS. PERMEABLE BLOCK PAVING

Not all block paving handles water the same way. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand the key differences and choose the right option for your driveway.

STANDARD

Traditional blocks are laid tightly together on a compacted sub-base with sand in the joints.
Water runs off the surface and needs to be directed into drainage channels or soakaways.
In many areas (especially in the UK), using standard paving over a large area may require planning permission if proper drainage isn’t installed.

Specially designed blocks are laid with wider joints, and the sub-base below is made of crushed stone that allows water to soak through.
Surface water drains directly into the ground beneath, reducing the need for extra drainage systems.
Usually doesn’t require planning permission as it’s considered a sustainable drainage system
